in which i wear royal blue

Photobucket

Hello world, new favorite skirt alert! Have I mentioned that I love thrifting? Pretty crazy that my socks (from Urban Outfitters) cost more than my top and skirt combined.

This day is awesome, no joke. The sunny-sun-sun is shining bright, the weekend is right around the corner, I got all my spring cleaning done last night in an organizational fit (dishes done, laundry done, closet rotated to spring/summer--hooray!)... okay, I still have to do things like clean out my car and scrub the tub, but otherwise I'm feeling refreshed and ready for the season!

On a totally unrelated note, I must admit that I actually kind of want to watch the re-broadcast of the Royal Wedding this evening! I'm a little bit shocked by this, mostly because I was getting really annoyed at my fellow Americans for being such cling-ons and acting crazy by camping out to see Kate and William like they were Justin Bieber or something. I am often annoyed by Americans for our obsessiveness with spectacle, and I guess I was particularly irked because this event doesn't even belong to us--we have no connection to these people, really--they are mere celebrities in our eyes. But then I had a niggling curiosity so I turned the TV on this morning and watched Kate arrive at Westminster Abbey, and watched their vows, and watched as he almost couldn't get the ring on her finger... and now I'm a bit charmed and kind of want to see the whole thing. I was telling a friend yesterday that I think our fascination with this wedding (and the royal family in general) is that the whole thing is a remnant of the romantic "Old World" that we've never had in our own country, but that is still a part of our history. While America is struggling with boring things like health care and oil prices and the economy and a divided government, the UK gets to celebrate the really extravagant, fairy-tale wedding of a Prince and a "commoner." I don't know, clearly I've given this way too much thought today.

That's all. Happy Friday, everyone! Enjoy the sunshine (if you have it) and I'll be back on Monday! :)

PS: K, stripes like these! These are the stripes I mean!

in which i am the turbanator

Photobucket

Sometimes when K sees what I am wearing in the morning he just shakes his head and chuckles. This was one of those mornings. I also got a bit of a laugh when I met a co-worker on my way into the office. "Nice hat," she said. Nobody knows that turbans are cool around here.

We're having another dismally dreary day here in Vermont, but April is almost over so I'd better see some pretty incredible May flowers next week. K and I did have our first creemees of the year yesterday evening (it was nearly 80 degrees! Weather is so weird) while strolling through our little town. I wish we were able to stroll further but we have a very small stretch of sidewalk before hitting a pretty major thoroughfare (even if it is just a small route with pitted pavement). Boo. I'm hoping that it will clear up enough for me to enjoy some sunshine over the weekend, but I suppose rain is more conducive to productivity anyway. I'm also seriously itching to go thrifting, so a trip to Goodwill is probably in order.

In other news, I watched HOWL last night (based on the poem by Allen Ginsberg and his life) and was rather disappointed. I don't know what I was expecting, exactly, but this was not it. I think it was the animation that really threw me off, but I think I expected more of a biopic. Anyway, I didn't love it. I am still seriously looking forward to the film interpretation of On the Road that will be coming out this year, but maybe my romantic fascination with the Beat Generation is on the wane?

in which i burst into technicolor

Photobucket

I've been daydreaming about this outfit for days now (is that weird?), ever since I thrifted this pretty J Crew polka dot blouse and immediately knew I wanted to wear it with my red skirt. Something about this outfit feels very Kate Spade--a simple, girly getup in bold, bright colors, with a twist of sixties prep. After I overdosed on pastels last week, it's not surprise that I'm boomeranging back into brights this week! Also, this Jewelmint necklace is still my favorite thing ever :)

Last night we had a major storm that took out our power with a crack of lightning and a thunderclap. Luckily we had finished making dinner at that point, so we ate our hot dogs (tofu for her, bratwurst-and-sauerkraut for him) and macaroni-and-cheese (we're both totally broke) while watching lightning bolts streak across the purplish sky. I love thunderstorms, but I'm so grateful that we never get anything worse around here. I don't think that I could live comfortably with the threat of tornadoes and/or hurricanes hanging overhead like a dark cloud.

I haven't been making progress on any of my writing projects (I now officially have a TV pilot, screenplay and novel in the works) for the past week because I've been too busy! Hopefully this weekend I will be able to settle back into my writing routine.

Welcome to all of my new followers (and thanks again to Meg for yesterday's feature)!

waking life @ bow ties are cool

You guys! There's this really lovely gal I know who thinks bow ties are cool (well, because they are) and she did a little feature on me over on her blog! You can wander on over there if you'd like :) And while you're at it, get to know Meg (if you haven't already). She's A+.

in which i dress like a (new) wave

Holy Tuesday. This outfit is a little bit lackluster, but maybe it just feels that way because I didn't have time to do my hair. It's another miserably drizzly day here in VT so I'm coddling my poor legs with tights this AM and wearing watery hues.

I did wear this green jumper rather recently, but I know that I will have to bury it in the back of my closet once the summer heat hits so I want to wear it as much as possible before then!

Last night I accompanied K to his film class (so strange being back in that environment...) for a screening of Cléo from 5 to 7, a 1962 French New Wave film by Agnès Varda (who for some reason I just assumed was a man... probably because I just assume that every French New Wave filmmaker is Godard in disguise... and now I realize that a documentary film about her has been in my Netflix queue for months. Small (film) world.). Anyway, I do actually really like those films, but (in my opinion) the classroom environment is not the proper place to enjoy one. I feel like it should have been projected against a wall in an old warehouse somewhere, instead of in a stuffy auditorium full of unappreciative students ("Thank God," one student said when it was over. "That was so boring," said another). Anyway. It wasn't my absolute favorite film of the genre, but I can always appreciate the atmosphere.

in which i am full of easter bunnies

Photobucket

Boo-hoo to Monday. I've been a bit of a wreck today, I'm not going to lie. Firstly, I slept later than planned (shocker) and totally forgot that I was supposed to get my summer tires put on this morning at 8 AM. And then I realized that because I got home around 10 PM last night I wasn't able to go grocery shopping and I didn't really have anything for breakfast. But at least I had this cute little striped dress to hide all of the chocolate Easter bunnies in my belly (I think it will also be my new favorite for chilly summer days).

What a weekend I had. The family and I arrived in CT in time for a late dinner, then went back to my aunt's house. I had a few too many fresca-and-raspberry-smirnoff's and felt nice and sick the next day, just in time to carry loads of brush up and down the skinny, snaking stairs of our cabin on the lake, in the pouring rain, while wearing a one-dollar poncho, enormous mud boots and oversized work gloves. Three hours of back-breaking labor later we headed "home" to loll around on the floor in front of a space heater watching movies. We did go out to a lovely dinner that night during which we were all pretty much too exhausted even to converse (which does not happen often in my family), and to Coldstone for dessert. I brought about ten pounds of pasta home in doggie bags. Easter Sunday the men did some more manual labor while the ladies lounged around, and we headed to Easter dinner. We did attempt to play "Jarts" (this game is officially illegal now because it's too dangerous, but the set was from the 'fifties or something), but my brother broke one and that cut the game short. Instead we just ate. A lot. And it was delicious. But then I got sick again. So I spent most of my weekend sick! I'm becoming a weakling.

Anyway, it was a good weekend but I am feeling rather worn out this Monday morning. I always seem to feel like I need a holiday after my holidays!
