photobucket and a potluck

Photobucket

Wow, thank goodness Friday has arrived. I'm glad I had this outfit lined up from earlier this week so I could roll out of bed last minute and just slap something on my body. Basically this outfit was born because I wanted to wear these argyle tights with my woolly bowling shoes, and the silky horse scarf sprang immediately to mind.

Last night I went to a goodbye party/potluck for one of my oldest and closest friends, who is moving back to Portland (OR). She and I moved out there together after graduating from our respective universities and while I lasted only a year, she stuck around a little longer, traveled around Europe, and is now going back. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sad to see her go, but I do think this will be a really healthy and amazing change for her and I wish her lots of luck (and lots of trips back east)! I always just bring bread and wine to potluck parties (because that's really all you need and because I am a) lazy and b) not an amazing cook). I also saw a keg for the first time since college (I'm such an old fogey).

My parents and their friends always had potluck gatherings when I was growing up, so participating in a potluck is, in my mind, the epitome of adulthood. My mom remarked at our last Christmas Eve party that the potluck-style dinner doesn't work as well now that all of the children are grown because we eat twice as much food and still consider ourselves exempt from making a culinary contribution because we're still attending the party with our parents and are therefore "the kids." I do find it interesting that my friends are now carrying on this tradition, and I wonder if it's something we would even think about doing if that wasn't our only experience with adult socialization when we were young. Do you guys potluck? What do you bring (yes, I'd like to steal your ideas)?

Also, I did something today that I swore I would never do: I upgraded my Photobucket account to "pro." I am such a cheapskate I'm surprised that I didn't just create a multitude of accounts using various phony email addresses to hop, skip and jump between as I used up my measly allotted bandwidth. I guess laziness triumphs over stinginess this week, and I blame the subzero temperatures (In March? Really?). When will it warm up in this godforsaken state?

  1. I love this outfit! The bright red with your yellow scarf is perfect! And those shoes are great as well :)
I think the only potluck I've ever been to was a multi-cultural girl scout potluck in like 3rd grade, and I'm pretty sure we brought chicken marsala because my family's Italian. Sorry I'm not of much help! Must get to more pot lucks soon, haha.

  2. I recently bit the photobucket bullet as well. I'd made one of those link buttons and it swollowed up my bandwitdh in surprising quantities. The pricing is alright though and I quite like the individual image stats.

I don't really do pot lucks a lot myself but some friends of mine in Austria seem to quite a lot :)

When I do attend I usually make noodle salad. Make up some noodles, add a tin of carrots and a tin of peas, some gherkins if no gherkin haters are attending, mayonaise, sweetcorn if no sweetcorn haters are attending, a dash of oil and vinegar, salt and pepper. Done. Can you tell I am a sucky cook? ;) I am ok at cake though. If in doubt I bake :)

  3. I noticed you'd exceeded your bandwidth on some post yesterday. I don't really understand why, but I don't ever seem to have exceeded mine. Maybe because I resize the photos before hand? Oh well, it's not that expensive.

I think I've had a lot of informal potlucks that weren't really referred to by that name... and I always stress myself out trying to make something nice despite being a sub-par cook.

  5. The bright yellow and orange/red look so great together with this dress. I love those tight. I really like when I have an outfit planned so I don't even have to think in the morning. Me and my friends always have potlucks at thanksgiving, christmas and a few bbq's every summer. Its such a good time
