saturday style inspiration: ali macgraw

Since I mentioned Ali MacGraw this week, I figured now would be as good a time as any to feature the lovely lady for today's style inspiration post. Ms. MacGraw got her start as a photographic assistant to Diana Vreeland at Harper's Bazaar after graduating from Wellesley College in 1960. She is best known for her oscar-nominated performance in Love Story (1970), which landed her face on the cover of TIME magazine. After three short-lived marriages in rapid succession (to banker Robin Hoen from 1961-62, producer Robert Evans from 1969-72, and finally to Steve McQueen from 1972-78), she struggled with alcohol before finding her center in the practice of Hatha Yoga.

Ironically, she apparently appeared on Richard Blackwell's worst-dressed list in 1971 (although, granted, most of the inspirational style photos of Ms. MacGraw are film stills... and she most likely did not style herself :) I am dying to find a fur hat like the one she is wearing in the second photo, and I love the knotted turban and open-front dress from the first photo, which appears to be candid--if you ask me, that's evidence of her personal style!

  2. I've never seen Love Story, but clearly I need to put it on my list. That camel coat of her's is popping up all over the blogosphere lately! She does have such a classic fresh all American style that I cannot help but admire and she has this natural really unique beauty. Wow, no one really looks like and that's amazing in itself.
