style icon saturday: marianne faithfull

Marianne Faithfull is the quintessential rock-and-roll groupie/girlfriend. To me, she is the real life Penny Lane, with perhaps a more pronounced drug problem. She has certainly led a wild life--as a singer/songwriter in the sixties, she was especially known for her four-year relationship with Mick Jagger. (Of this relationship, she has said "My first move was to get a Rolling Stone as a boyfriend. I slept with three and decided the lead singer was the best bet.") When the affair ended in 1970, she dropped from the top of the Swinging London scene to the absolute bottom. She lived on the streets of Soho for two years, suffering from heroin addiction, and never really recovered. It was an absolute waste, but that's rock and roll, I suppose. Still, she is one of the most stylish ladies I've ever seen:

Rebellion is the only thing that keeps you alive!
(Marianne Faithfull)

In 1994, Marianne published an autobiography, Faithfull, which I am actually really eager to read. It's always fascinating to look inside the lives of rock stars from that era.

  1. Wow, this season's styles are basically just a remix of her wardrobe, aren't they? She was certainly beautiful, dressed well and sang well. Not sure she was terribly smart, but I guess we can't have it all...

  2. I really enjoy these style inspiration posts. You've chosen some pretty stylish ladies so far. She really did have some great outfits. I love the white dress with the black collar.
