in which i emerge from the fog

Photobucket

I'm feeling a lot better today after a full 24 hour respite. I called in sick and spent all of yesterday swimming in a sea of blankets, tissues, and Nyquil (and finishing the last of Felicity--definitely see the J.J. Abrams influence in those final few episodes ;P). I still feel like my head is full of smoggy air (I promise that is not my natural state), and am hoping for another long, luxurious night of sleep to cure me completely in time for my birthday tomorrow! Today I just wanted to be comfortable for my return to the office, and opted for a cozy knit dress :)

As you can see, I did push through the fog of my head cold to trim my bangs last night. They were getting out of hand.

Did anyone else watch Felicity (I know I'm yeaaaaars behind on this one--last year I ploughed through Ally McBeal, so you can see I'm slowly catching up)? It's funny, because especially in the first season I kept recognizing clothes that some of the characters were wearing (specifically Julie Emerick--who was SUCH an annoying character I'm glad she went off to find herself and spared us for the last few seasons) from my middle- to early-high school days. She had a couple of shirts that I'm positive I had circled in the Alloy catalog (does anyone remember that?--Alloy and dEliA*s were the big thing back then). I'm curious--were you rooting for Ben or Noel?

in which i am sick

Photobucket

I'm crazy sick today. Booo. K and I went grocery shopping last night and I was craving Vitamin C so badly that I bought a carton of grapefruit juice and immediately drank two glasses when I got home. Apparently my body was trying to tell me something. I spent all night sniffling and sniveling and now I've got a full on head cold. Impeccable timing, illness.

Standing out in the cold with bare legs probably isn't the brightest way to spend a morning when kicking off a cold, but whatever. I've been so good about keeping up with the blog lately, I didn't want to fall by the wayside! Tonight I really want 1) spicy chili, 2) a hot bath, and 3) an early, Nyquil-induced bedtime. I really have to rally if I'm going to be able to sing this weekend!

Now, please excuse me while I go blow my nose for the nth time this morning...

in which i go long with prints

Photobucket

I used to buy long skirts for the express purpose of hemming them into minis, but lately I've been loving the longer lengths. I get fewer funny looks when I wear them now (people have come to expect sartorial eccentricity from me, I suppose), and they make me feel a bit more mature. I feel almost indecent in my super-short skirts these days... my, how things change!

In other totally random news, I started taking a daily multivitamin for the first time yesterday (being a pasta-loving vegetarian means I don't always get as many vitamins as I need, and although I've been a longtime champion of the balanced diet and ingesting nutrients the old-fashioned way, it doesn't always happen for me), and man is that stuff effective! It advertised a boost to my metabolism, but the past couple of days I've taken it without eating first and felt incredibly nauseous. This morning I viciously attacked a nectarine with my teeth in an attempt to combat the swell of sickness. Not sure how I feel about that. It's just a regular old one-a-day for women, but I'll definitely be following the instruction to take "with food" from now on.

Anyway, back to the outfit: I thrifted both this lovely cashmere sweater and this pretty printed midi skirt at Goodwill last week--I have been scoring big time there lately, and it's created a monster in me. I have a major thrifting itch that never goes away! I want to shop all the time! I did buy this skirt with the intention to shorten it, but again, wanted to give it a spin before I cut it up. What do you think? Should I leave it long? I kind of like it, it just feels less versatile this way.

Another week is flying by...

mardi gras, take two

Okay, so I guess today is the real Fat Tuesday. How come nobody told me that I was a nut when I announced to the world that it was Mardi Gras last week? Geez, some friends you are. That's worse than letting me walk around with toilet paper stuck to my shoe... or smile with spinach in my teeth. Anyway, I guess I was looking too far ahead on the calendar, wishing that February would end already...

The lighting is weird in these photos, not sure why. The days are getting longer! I guess maybe I should adjust my aperture.

K and I were supposed to go look at an apartment tonight (I'm getting excited now!) but turns out heat isn't included and it's a liiiittle too small for our tastes. So that's a disappointment. But we're still looking! Instead of running all the way out to Burlington to see it, I'll be cooking homemade macaroni & cheese (mom's recipe, my favorite ever!) with some sort of side (stuffed tomatoes?) and watching hours of 90210 (yesssss).

Tomorrow I'm going to join Jazzercise! I'm actually really excited about it--I even asked my boss if I could adjust my work schedule to align with the Jazzercise schedule (is that a tad overzealous?) . When I was in college I took a cardio-kickboxing class and a step class and I loved them both (and was actually in the best shape of my life!)... that's really the only way that I get a well-rounded workout. Otherwise I just elliptical for half an hour and after I get off I'm too bored to do any toning exercises, which is the most important thing for me to do.

Anyway, happy Mardi Gras!

saints alive!

So. Did everybody watch the Superbowl last night?? It was actually a pretty exciting game, if you're into that kind of thing (which I occasionally am, even if I spent the second half chatting it up about weddings and makeup).

I was rooting for the Saints because a) they were the underdog and I always root for the little guy, b) they had better uniforms, c) apparently the Colts are to the Patriots what the Yankees are to the Red Sox, and my compatriots are big NE fans, so the choice was sort of made for me.

Anyway, it was nice to hang out and eat deliiiicious mushroom quesadillas and vegetarian chili while downing Corona Light and Margaritas... any excuse to overeat is a-okay with me! That said, I really need to get back to my regular (better) eating habits. I definitely fell off the wagon this holiday season, what with K off in Washington and me sitting at home with my parents while they plugged me with all kinds of confectionary delights (cookies and chocolate and eggnog, oh my!) and I would really like to shake the heaviness that I feel as a result of all of my edible indulgences.

Having said that, I often get rather hot-and-bothered about the cost of health in this country. Not only is general health care impossibly expensive for most people (I'm lucky enough to have a plan through work, but the deductible is pretty high), but even I, as someone with a definite interest in health and a reasonable income to support it, have a hard time justifying the expense of a gym membership. When I first started working where I am now, I received a $25/month fitness reimbursement, which cut the cost of a membership in half and (I thought) made it realistically affordable. Without that assistance (thanks to the tanking economy), I have a hard time spending $60 a month to go work out in the tiny, itty-bitty gym that is available to me here in Waterbury, which looks like a dungeon and smells like a locker room. I did attempt to go running before work during the summer, but I certainly cannot bring myself to go jogging in subzero temperatures for the six months of winter around here. Conundrum. Instead, I spend a little bit extra at the grocery store to make sure that I'm getting the most nutritious food possible for my buck--fruit, veggies, fiber-rich granola, yogurt--if I can't take advantage of the endorphin-high, I need to be putting some serious positive energy into my body to keep me afloat.

So many things about America just frustrate me, a lot of the time. I won't get too far into it because I could go on all day, but this is a really important issue and as one of the most developed countries in the world, we should recognize and embrace the value of healthy living. It is absurd to me that 1/3 of women (and 60 million people) in this country are considered obese. Not just overweight... obese. No wonder the health care system is so problematic! These people are developing all kinds of health problems, from diabetes to heart disease and back again! I think that the government should somehow encourage people to get up and go the the gym or get some sort of exercise, maybe by subsidizing gym memberships or providing assistance to fitness facilities so that they can lower their membership costs. Maybe there could be some sort of local incentive to shop at farmers' markets or to buy more vegetables at the grocery store. I don't know, I'm not a politico... it just seems like there have to be ways to help people who really do want to improve their natural quality of life but can't quite afford it--going to the gym does make you feel better, even if only for a little while. After working out, I always have more energy and feel accomplished and generally uplifted... I think people would just be happier if they were healthier, and that would solve a whole slew of other problems in our prozac-popping nation.

I think that Tieka's story is incredibly inspiring. She was always a beautiful girl (and certainly never obese), but after reading her blog I definitely got the sense that she found so much happiness and peace with herself after losing the weight that she did... and that is the important thing. In a 1998 interview for Rolling Stone, Fiona Apple said, "Of course I have an eating disorder. Every girl in fucking America has an eating disorder," and unfortunately, I believe that this is also true. I won't say every, but 99% of women in this country are negatively influenced in varying degrees by the skinnyskinny models in the magazines... it is undeniable. In my opinion, that is just as bad as obesity. Why can't we all just strive to be healthy? Basically, the point of that rant is that this month I am going to buckle down and shell out for the gym membership again, at least to get myself back on track. After that, we'll see what happens... maybe exploratory walks in the woods and long summer swims will have to suffice :)

Annnd for the outfit: I love love love this white rosette shirt from Marshall's. I wish I could wear it every day. I got this skirt at Goodwill and purposefully hemmed it a little longer than usual, just in case I ever need to wear something appropriate. It's an okay length, but of course I wish I had made it a wee bit shorter. For some reason I'm really into grey lately...
