in which i go long with prints

Photobucket

I used to buy long skirts for the express purpose of hemming them into minis, but lately I've been loving the longer lengths. I get fewer funny looks when I wear them now (people have come to expect sartorial eccentricity from me, I suppose), and they make me feel a bit more mature. I feel almost indecent in my super-short skirts these days... my, how things change!

In other totally random news, I started taking a daily multivitamin for the first time yesterday (being a pasta-loving vegetarian means I don't always get as many vitamins as I need, and although I've been a longtime champion of the balanced diet and ingesting nutrients the old-fashioned way, it doesn't always happen for me), and man is that stuff effective! It advertised a boost to my metabolism, but the past couple of days I've taken it without eating first and felt incredibly nauseous. This morning I viciously attacked a nectarine with my teeth in an attempt to combat the swell of sickness. Not sure how I feel about that. It's just a regular old one-a-day for women, but I'll definitely be following the instruction to take "with food" from now on.

Anyway, back to the outfit: I thrifted both this lovely cashmere sweater and this pretty printed midi skirt at Goodwill last week--I have been scoring big time there lately, and it's created a monster in me. I have a major thrifting itch that never goes away! I want to shop all the time! I did buy this skirt with the intention to shorten it, but again, wanted to give it a spin before I cut it up. What do you think? Should I leave it long? I kind of like it, it just feels less versatile this way.

Another week is flying by...

vintage printed pants

I found and fell for these pretty floral pants, which have since sold on kennedyholmes. It's probably for the best because I am supposed to be saving my moneys, but I am still in love with them (if you happened to purchase them, send along a photo so I can see how you styled them for spring/summer!). Anyway, my wheels started turning and I did a little search for floral/printed pants on etsy for the upcoming season. Since the seventies revival is in full swing, now is as good a time as any to pick up a pair of high-waisted long-legs!

(DollyrockerVintage/vintagehillbillies)

I'm still skeptical that I will ever be able to pull off a pair of high-waisted pants (because I have tried and failed in the past), but I will openly advocate for the style! What do you think? A little too wild? Perfectly seasonal with a basic white blouse or tee?

i'm just mad about chevron

Photobucket

Happy Mardi Gras, everyone! I hope you're doing something fattening this Tuesday :) I'll be having a regular, ordinary afternoon and wishing that I was throwing beads around down in New Orleans instead.

This dress is one of my very favorites, and it's definitely appropriate for the seventies revival happening this spring. I'm not sure I'll ever bust out my bellbottoms (not because I don't like them, but because I rarely wear jeans... maybe I should challenge myself), but I can certainly channel that seventies vibe with this classic chevron-print sweaterdress in a gradient of browns.

Speaking of challenge, this week I'm making a concerted effort not to wear my Seychelles oxfords. I literally wear them with everything, and while I will still love and adore them until the end of time, I do have about four hundred other shoes clamoring for attention in a very crowded closet. So far, so good! In fact, I might even try to wear a different pair of shoes every day this week! Wish me luck :) Also, it has officially stopped snowing (thank goodness), but all of the freezing and thawing that has been going on lately caused a break in the pump that supplies water to my little town, and now we have to boil our water before drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food, etc. I feel like I'm living in the Dark Ages. Or, as Snooki would say, "I feel like a pilgrim from the f**king 'twenties washing this sh*t in the sink!"/"boiling this water before drinking!"

In other news, this is what I had for dinner last night, because it was pretty:

(spaghetti with spinach, cherry tomatoes and goat cheese, tossed with pesto and olive oil)

PS: I am a MAJOR pasta lover. There is no way I could ever turn my back on carbs. Give me a bowl of spaghetti and a loaf of bread and I'm in heaven.

ski and ride 1976

Photobucket

My goodness, it's Friday! Since I still haven't gotten around to trimming my bangs (but I have gotten around to 3x/wk at the gym, which is beyond awesome for me!), I wanted to go the seventies route today. It's kind of funny how the length of my bangs determines how I want to dress--when they're short and mod I also like to adorn myself accordingly.

This sweater started it all. Sort of. It was one of the very first articles of clothing that I stole from my mother (the very first was the tweed blazer that goes with my favorite skirt) when I really started to appreciate vintage. She calls it her "ski sweater," and I can totally imagine myself plummeting down a mountain in 1976 with the wind in my hair and flared snowpants (no, seriously, she also had a pair of navy flared snowpants that I used to wear when I was in high school). I wish hitting the slopes wasn't so expensive these days, because I really miss snowboarding. Every winter Wednesday when I was in high school we would get a half day and the school would bus us over to Smuggler's Notch for some skiing and riding. And it was free! Those were some of the best days of my life. Now a single day on the mountain can cost upwards of $75, which I think is absolute thievery. Still, someday I'll get all my girlfriends and our menfolk together for a long weekend--slopes by day, hot tubs and hot cocoa (or champagne... always with the Andre) by night :)

the suede way

Wearing suede today was probably pretty silly of me, considering that it is supposed to rain. But I haven't worn these boots in such a long time and they were calling to me this morning. And I'm silly. Not much going on today... just a boring old Tuesday. K and I have to do laundry tonight, which is my least favorite chore (and that's saying something, because pretty much every chore is--well, a chore--that means you, dishes!). I miss having a laundromat in our building... we have to drive 15 minutes to get to one and just sit there. And I don't have any money left until payday on Thursday so I can't even sneak over to Plato's Closet during the wash cycle and rifle through their latest consignments. Bah humbug.

(turtleneck dress: American Apparel; skirt: mom's; boots: Urban Outfitters; scarf: F21; belt: Goodwill)

I feel very Ali Macgraw in Love Story today (minus the leukemia...). Maybe it's just the trench coat, but I think the suede boots and the wide belt/classic tweed paired with the beatnik black turtleneck and fringed scarf contribute to that vibe.

that seventies dress

I love how spectacularly seventies this dress is... perfect for a crisp fall Friday like today! When K and I go to the laundromat I try to sneak into the Plato's Closet next door to scrounge around for discarded goodies. Usually the laundry finishes before I do, and I've never walked out of there with more than one or two items because it's totally overwhelming. But this little H&M sweaterdress fits like a charm, and I adore the retro pattern/color scheme.

(dress: H&M via Plato's Closet; boots: Aldo; socks: stolen from mom, belt: Bargain Boutique)

Now if only I could get my socks to stay up...
