in which there is romance in snow

Photobucket

I had a completely different getup planned for today, but it felt like a hazy romantic sort of morning. Sure enough, not long after I took these photos it started snowing--big, fluffy flakes like we've hardly seen all winter. We'll see if it sticks around. I'm just glad I have the weekend to huddle inside and catch up on Downton Abbey and do some hemming and Oscar-watching.

I love this dress, madly. It was my first Modcloth purchase, and maybe my favorite. I think the print is perfection for spring, but the cool florals work equally well for the winter months, which is a fashion blogger's dream! Also, I like my milkmaid braids much better when I make them looser like this... I'll never go back to my old braid ways.

Happy weekend, everyone!

in which i despise that devil ice

Photobucket

One more reason I am beyond ready for spring to come? I've had enough of this ice situation. I already fell once this winter, right on my elbow, such that I thought it had shattered into a million little elbow-bone pieces. And I fell again today--whammo--right on my knee, which is now a swollen, mangled mess of burst blood vessels and (what feels like) bruised bone. I'd take fluffy snow any day over this. (And I know I'm wearing heels, but I'm so careful!)

Anyway, enough whiny-time. I'm trying to squeeze in as much neutral brown and black as I can before I officially give myself over to the pretty pastels of springtime (there is still ice on the ground, after all).

When I destroyed my knee this morning my mind went immediately to how amusingly perilous fashion blogging can be, and then to how strange it is in general. I've been taking pictures of myself every morning (weekends excepted) for over two years now, and publishing them on the internet. That's longer than I've committed to anything in my entire life. When I really think about it, it all just seems so bizarre. These modern times...

Sometimes I start to feel ridiculous, but then, life is ridiculous.
And that's what makes it so much fun.

in which i'm gardening a lot of attention

Photobucket

When Modcloth contacted me a couple of weeks ago and offered to send me a dress to style because Elizabeth was "crushin' on my blog," it was the equivalent of receiving a valentine from the cute boy in middle school math class (ohhh middle school--so much unrequited love). I have been reading Delightfully Tacky since I first discovered style blogging, and it has been one of my favorites from the beginning. Elizabeth just seems like such a cool girl, and she has such profound insights on blogging (and life in general) that reading her blog is always a treat. I've always identified with her Alaskan roots, because even though Vermont is nowhere near as northern it's still a frigid winter wonderland for five months out of the year, and I looked on with envy when she took her wanderlust on the road with that epic Brave trip. I'm excited to see how she styles her "Gardening a Lot of Attention" dress, and I can emphatically say that the crush is reciprocal!

In other news, I had a great weekend! K was working both Friday and Saturday nights so I had the apartment (and DVD player) all to myself. I watched several movies, finished "The Sun Also Rises" (which I'd never read before--a travesty, right??), and wrote 2,000 words. It was all very lovely. I spent Sunday cleaning like a madwoman, doing some last minute grocery shopping, and preparing guacamole and mushroom-caramelized onion-goat cheese quesadillas for our Superbowl party that night. I sort of arbitrarily decided to root for the NY Giants (because everyone always roots for the Patriots around here), and was so excited when they won! It was great fun with good friends, and we sure had ourselves a feast:

Also, can I just say: Madonna's half-time show was amazing. She's still got it, folks!

in which i wear my heart on my dress

Photobucket

Man, it is not warm. I know I whine about the temperature every day, but seriously. It was windy, too.

(love me do dress: modcloth; necklace: jewelmint; earrings: gift; tights: hue; shoes: seychelles)

This is the Modcloth dress (now sold out, but here's another adorable option) that I bought for Valentine's Day (knowing that I would probably wear it at least once before then, because I can't stand leaving new clothes in my closet unworn for too long). I was unsure of the fit, but with a slip underneath it doesn't bunch as weirdly so I think I like it (and I think the print is just darling, so that helps). Unfortunately the color doesn't really come across because it's a cloudy day, but you can be sure I'll wear it again on a sunny one! I'm not sure I'll actually wear this for Valentine's Day... it might be a bit too casual for the five-star restaurant K is inevitably going to take me to ;) (hint, hint--just kidding).

I got my snowboots last week, and since then I have fallen twice--once while walking up the stairs behind our apartment, and last night I totally wiped out in the driveway (to be fair, it's a complete sheet of ice). I landed on my elbow and it hurt like crazy. Winter is treacherous. Anyway, the point of that story is that I suppose I was thinking that walking would be safer in these boots than in my usual towering heels, but in fact I walk much more carelessly and end up on my ass. It's like snow tires--during the first few blizzards of the season there are dozens of cars off the road because they drive like usual, thinking their studded snow tires will keep them safe (you still have to drive slower, fools!). My boots are like snow tires. Apparently I still need to watch my step.

Not gonna lie, I'm looking forward to a weekend not spent taking off my outerwear and standing the cold in front of a camera. Have a good one!

in which and then the snow started falling

Photobucket

First came cold, then came snow! It's still rather warm and wet, but the fat flakes have been falling all day, and it's officially a winter wonderland around these parts. Pretty amazing how it can pile up overnight.

Today is a good day. It's the last day before the extended weekend, and K came into town to take me to lunch at Juniper's Fare, for a special little treat :) Tonight will be busy--I'm heading to the gym after work, and then baking an apple pie for the big day tomorrow. I am a little annoyed that the snow came before Thanksgiving... it won't go with my harvest-inspired outfit. Snow is decidedly December precipitation.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving (tomorrow) to my US readers! I will be eating all day.
