saturday style icon: mia farrow

Today's subject: the iconic Mia Farrow (whose name appears in the media basically any time a young starlet crops her hair into a pixie--most recently, Carey Mulligan). I first saw Ms. Farrow onscreen when my introductory screenwriting class watched Rosemary's Baby, then saw all of the films she made with Woody Allen (because he's my favorite, though undoubtedly he is not her favorite anymore...), and most recently watched her with Dustin Hoffman in John and Mary. Prepare yourself for a plethora of peter pan collars and big unblinking eyes:

(Mia, the original Angelina Jolie, with her brood of adopted darlings--one of whom would go on to MARRY her then-husband, Woody Allen)

I know it's not technically her style, but I couldn't resist including a few looks from her portrayal of Daisy in The Great Gatsby (alongside Robert Redford--it's a great adaptation!). And, because we all love love, a photo of Ms. Farrow dancing with Ol' Blue Eyes on their wedding day (it was a short-lived love--he apparently served her with divorce papers when she refused to leave the production of Rosemary's Baby to work on his film The Detective). They look so happy here!

the color wheel

...IT'S SNOWING!

(skirt: goodwill; shirt: old navy; belt: salvation army; tights: ??; shoes: seychelles; scarf: etsy)

So remember how I said I only wanted to wear grey and was settling in to a long winter of monochromatic monotony? I lied. This happened last week as well--I muted my outfit one day and came back the next with a burst of loud color. It's like I'm drunk at the color wheel. This is kind of a metaphor for my life I think.

I paired this skirt with this shirt to give it a sort of dress-like appearance. They don't exactly match, but it's close enough to make you wonder--is it a dress? Is it a skirt? Is it a sandwich? (Just testing your attention span.) It is Friday (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), after all. I have the hardest time picking tights to go with red dresses--for some reason, nothing feels right. I think this kind of works, and I originally threw on my black mary janes but decided that it probably wouldn't photograph well and I would end up looking like I had two charred, blackened stumps for legs. I didn't want to worry you.

Happy Weekend, everyone!

pressed pennies and monochromocracy

Two Christmases ago, K gave me some presents (bien sûr), and this little pressed penny was one of my favorites (sometimes it is the little things...). I always intended to turn it into a necklace, but never got around to doing so--about a year ago I poked a hole in the top, and only last month did I finally put a chain on it. Man, do I know how to procrastinate, or what? Anyway, I think it is charming :)

(dress: rock n' rose vintage; tights: goodwill; shoes: seychelles; necklace: diy)

I feel like I've been a little less adventurous with color lately. Maybe it's a reflection of my grey surroundings, but some mornings I feel like color is an assault on my eyes (I originally put on a pair of raspberry tights with this dress and swapped them out for monochromatic grey). Also, I've had a bit of a revelation about my personal style, which I'll get into later. I bought this dress when I was living in PDX, and it always makes me a bit nostalgic for the little old city. I would go to Powell's, spend hours and hours browsing the racks for used books, then hop across the street and duck into Rock N' Rose Vintage for some vintage shopping (in an effort to escape the rain, usually). Mind you, when I was living in Oregon I was working as a barista and making no money whatsoever, so all of this shopping was very, very naughty of me. No matter :)

Do you see all of the broken branches strewn on the ground around me? We had a huge storm yesterday, with winds up to 75 mph. I had an appointment yesterday morning and when I was driving to work I was whiteknuckled with fear because I thought my car was literally going to blow off the interstate. When I got home the entire town of Richmond was powerless--even the stoplights were out--but luckily we had to do laundry (I never thought those words would ever pass through my lips, but there you go), so I just grabbed the clothes and the soap (fumbling in the dark) and hoped that everything would be sorted out by the time we got home. It worked out. I got to sit in the well-lit laundromat and do a crossword puzzle, and our little town was up and running when we returned.

Oh, and speaking of grey, I found my first grey hair this morning. Not awesome. We're just going to chalk that one up to stress and pluck the slate clean.

(PS: Thanks to everyone who left lovely comments re: my fall photo shoot! I made K read all of them in an attempt to convince him that his talents were appreciated--here's hoping you can convince him for me!)

fall photo shoot

(photos by K)

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that K and I loaded up the car and drove through the countryside taking photographs of my autumnal outfits... and here they are! I think they turned out really well, and I'm impressed that K took such lovely pictures (and didn't even edit them!), esp. since he usually photographs buildings, not people :) I may have to rope him into practicing on my mug more often. I figured since today is the first of December, it was only right to celebrate with a little nostalgia for November. Fall is officially over in my mind!

here comes december

Truth be told, I really just wanted to wear another big sweater today. With leggings. And slippers. But I forced myself to look deeper into my closet and this is what I came up with. When it gets cold, my desire to dress diminishes to nothingness. I really just want to hibernate at home and eat chili and watch E!

I'm so ready to start celebrating Christmas. We aren't getting our tree until the weekend after next, so I feel like my holiday spirit is on hold! I seriously need some cheer (in the form of spiked eggnog, festive fir scented candles, chipper carols throughout the house, and well, okay... it's time for some snow!). I mean, it's December tomorrow, and Vermont is practically at the North Pole. Well, not exactly. But pretty close :)
