in which i time travel to november

Photobucket

For some reason this strikes me as more November than October-appropriate, probably because it's so dark. Man, did I go heavy on the scarves this morning :) I was wearing the small one at first, but couldn't make the outfit work with hat, so I threw this large one over it and voilĂ ! Instant match. I kind of liked the way they looked layered together, so I just left the little one hanging.

Oy. Not feeling terribly loquacious today. It's just Wednesday, you know? I've been writing every night for the past four, so maybe I'm tapped out. On the subject of time travel, this autumn season has really made me want to rewatch those old favorites that capture that fall feeling so well (hence, E.T.). Next up has got to be Donnie Darko.

in which i like loafers (and loafing around)

Photobucket

So, it's Monday once again. I'm still getting used to the settings on my camera, so please bear with me... these are still a bit overexposed. This outfit was one of those that just came together without much stress or pain (there's something to be said for that on a Monday morning--maybe it's a sign that this will be a good week). At the last minute, I remember that I finally got my Lulu*s loafers from my mom this weekend (it's been quite the process, shipping to my parent's house back at the beginning of August, exchanging for a new pair at the very last minute, shipping to my parent's house again, and finally putting them on my feet). I think they bring the outfit together perfectly.

I had a great weekend, even though I went 0 for 2 on my "goals" and ended up being a bit of a bum instead (I'll allow it). Friday I was supposed to go out for karaoke with my gal pals, but was so completely burnt out at the end of an exhausting week that I rescheduled a hang-out for Saturday night, and spent the evening watching documentaries with K instead (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work and 21 Up [third in the Up series--check it out, it's pretty fascinating]). I guess I'm on quite the documentary kick.

Saturday my mom and I went to Burlington to get new phones, and mine is so pretty I keep picking it up and looking at it. It's not fancy or anything, but it's so fresh and new :) I'm trading in all of my beat up old technological devices for shiny replacements! Anyway, we went out for some Mexican food and margaritas (always good fun--thanks mom!) and picked up my lady friends for a wine night back at my place. We skyped in our friend who is currently out in Portland, and had a lovely evening huddled around the living room with maybe a few too many bottles of vino. The next morning K joined in for brunch at On the Rise, and after taking them home I spent the rest of the day half-napping and watching old favorite films. So no running, no writing, but lots of good people and good times :) Sometimes that's more important anyway.

I definitely feel refreshed and rejuvenated, and I'm ready to take on this week (and so glad to be back in my yellow tights after a summerlong hiatus)!

Positive Thinking: One nice thing about working a 9-5 office job is that I always have the weekends to look forward to. When I was working as a barista there were mornings I would have to get up at 5 am, Friday nights when I'd be cleaning up until 11 PM, holidays when I'd be serving double-time to keep up with all of the shoppers, and my weekends were never really weekends. I usually had Sunday and Monday off, which only corresponded with K's schedule because he also had a weird job (cookie delivery man--haha!). Also, on that note, I miss having loads of "expired" cookie dough always at my disposal. Although that was rather dangerous.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is: I know I complain a lot about my desk job, but in reality I do like having a reliable (relatively decent) paycheck, never really having to work overtime or "cover shifts," and not having to rely on tips to bring me to a livable wage (because most people are stingy). I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is easy to lose track of how hard it was to have such a weird work schedule. It didn't really feel like freedom then, it only feels like less of a shackle in retrospect. I guess the major difference is that at the time there was really nowhere to go but up, which felt like a sort of freedom because moving on was always a realistic option--at my current job, almost anything else would be a significant step backwards (at least financially). Just trying to keep everything in perspective.

In other news, I'm actually getting pretty excited for NYFW next month! (I'm not going or anything, but) I'm feeling especially inspired to pay attention to what's going on in the fashion world for some reason. Maybe it was the In Fashion exhibit at Shelburne Museum? Je ne sais quoi. Last year I was kind of "eh whatever" about the whole thing, but I think that may have been because I was trying to deny my true love for pretty clothes :)

Happy weekend, everyone! (Tip your Waiters! ;p)

in which i am the turbanator

Photobucket

Sometimes when K sees what I am wearing in the morning he just shakes his head and chuckles. This was one of those mornings. I also got a bit of a laugh when I met a co-worker on my way into the office. "Nice hat," she said. Nobody knows that turbans are cool around here.

We're having another dismally dreary day here in Vermont, but April is almost over so I'd better see some pretty incredible May flowers next week. K and I did have our first creemees of the year yesterday evening (it was nearly 80 degrees! Weather is so weird) while strolling through our little town. I wish we were able to stroll further but we have a very small stretch of sidewalk before hitting a pretty major thoroughfare (even if it is just a small route with pitted pavement). Boo. I'm hoping that it will clear up enough for me to enjoy some sunshine over the weekend, but I suppose rain is more conducive to productivity anyway. I'm also seriously itching to go thrifting, so a trip to Goodwill is probably in order.

In other news, I watched HOWL last night (based on the poem by Allen Ginsberg and his life) and was rather disappointed. I don't know what I was expecting, exactly, but this was not it. I think it was the animation that really threw me off, but I think I expected more of a biopic. Anyway, I didn't love it. I am still seriously looking forward to the film interpretation of On the Road that will be coming out this year, but maybe my romantic fascination with the Beat Generation is on the wane?

polka dots, please

Photobucket

So, it's Monday again. Boo. I guess that's okay, though, because I had a pretty great weekend, during which I did absolutely nothing. That's right. I read a book, I watched some movies, I ate veggie wraps and walked to the market and made macaroons. I wrote a scene. It was marvelous.

When I got dressed this morning I started thinking about trends, and how certain things cycle in and out of our lives over the years, and how sometimes one of those things will snag and stay with us until the next resurfacing. Scarves snagged for me. I think they are so classic and they add so much interest to any outfit because of their unique patterns. Every time I see a silk (or imitation silk) scarf on a shelf somewhere I buy it, and usually it only costs $.50-$1.50 (which is an absolute steal). I think I like them because I identify them with the beat movement, somewhere between hipster and homeless (all of the street kids I've encountered who traveled Kerouac-style by jumping trains wore handkerchiefs this way, most likely for nose-blowing and dust-blocking and the like). Also, bandits from old cowboy movies. But I don't identify with that so much :)
