in which the stripes and checkers meet

Okay, so remember how I said I would probably cry if it snowed at this point? Well, it did. Nothing is sticking, but the flurries outside my window are infuriating (in-flurri-ating?). Scraping ice from my windshield didn't do much for my Monday, either.

Luckily, I had a lovely weekend. On Friday evening I met a couple of girlfriends for some speed shopping at Goodwill (I didn't end up buying anything because the line was too long to check out... boo) and W./E. Terrible, terrible movie. Almost comically terrible, though, so I still enjoyed myself. The script failed me on so many fronts, I can't even begin to summarize my disappointment (it was disjointed, the dialogue was shockingly cliche, and neither relationship in the film was believable or had any depth), but the film was still pretty to watch (the costumes, the locations!). If only the characters had just stopped talking altogether and saved themselves the embarrassment of speaking such silly lines. After the movie we got late night tacos and chips and guac at El Cortijo downtown.

On Saturday I got up and met my mother in Montpelier for the Margot George Short Film Competition screening at the Green Mountain Film Festival. My friend Elizabeth (and movie-going, taco-eating partner in crime) had a film showing there that she made over the summer (you can watch "Last Days at Doughboy's" HERE). The story behind the film is that Elizabeth went into Doughboy's for a sort of "last meal" (it would be closing for good in a couple of days) and was struck by the emotion and community there. She felt that someone had to capture the place before it was gone forever, so she went in the next day with a camera and did just that. I'm so proud of her! (And I always cry when I see this film--it's so sad when these little mom and pop places close their doors. They can never really be replaced.)

On Sunday I finished sewing the elastic into my dress (by HAND, because I couldn't get my machine to cooperate) and added straps. Turns out it is WAY too short, even for me, so I'm going to have to go to Joann's and pick up some fabric for a thick hem at the bottom. I'm a little disappointed, but at this point I'm just glad it is almost finished!

K and I didn't get to go on a date last night because he was hard at work--so we're going out tonight! I like outings on weeknights. It makes the week fly by faster! :)

in which the weekend is over

This is a very typical Monday outfit, and a very typical Monday blog post (quick and late).

I had a very relaxing weekend, for the most part. Saturday I went back to my hometown to play a few songs at a fundraiser with my dad and brother... but first we all got dinner at Claire's in Hardwick (I got the polenta). Here's a glimpse into my afternoon:

On Sunday I literally read the entire day. I did get up a bit later than I would have liked, skipped over to the market for the week's shopping, and then huddled into the couch for the remainder of the day. There wasn't much else to do this weekend--it was unbelievably cold!

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day! Any fun plans? :)

in which i'm gardening a lot of attention

When Modcloth contacted me a couple of weeks ago and offered to send me a dress to style because Elizabeth was "crushin' on my blog," it was the equivalent of receiving a valentine from the cute boy in middle school math class (ohhh middle school--so much unrequited love). I have been reading Delightfully Tacky since I first discovered style blogging, and it has been one of my favorites from the beginning. Elizabeth just seems like such a cool girl, and she has such profound insights on blogging (and life in general) that reading her blog is always a treat. I've always identified with her Alaskan roots, because even though Vermont is nowhere near as northern it's still a frigid winter wonderland for five months out of the year, and I looked on with envy when she took her wanderlust on the road with that epic Brave trip. I'm excited to see how she styles her "Gardening a Lot of Attention" dress, and I can emphatically say that the crush is reciprocal!

In other news, I had a great weekend! K was working both Friday and Saturday nights so I had the apartment (and DVD player) all to myself. I watched several movies, finished "The Sun Also Rises" (which I'd never read before--a travesty, right??), and wrote 2,000 words. It was all very lovely. I spent Sunday cleaning like a madwoman, doing some last minute grocery shopping, and preparing guacamole and mushroom-caramelized onion-goat cheese quesadillas for our Superbowl party that night. I sort of arbitrarily decided to root for the NY Giants (because everyone always roots for the Patriots around here), and was so excited when they won! It was great fun with good friends, and we sure had ourselves a feast:

in which monday always comes

Monday, once again. I didn't post on Friday because it was POURING rain, but this is probably what I would have worn (since I was trying to wear a hat every day)!

I love weekends. After a wonderful date night on Friday (K and I had dinner at Sukho Thai, a new restaurant in Essex Junction, using a Jumponit! coupon I purchased this week [it was delicious], then walked over to the movie theater to see "The Descendants," which K had been adamantly against for some inexplicable reason except that he generally doesn't enjoy sad movies and it sounded like a sad movie [he really liked it--I always know best!]). I'm ashamed to admit that this means I've still seen only 3 of the 9 nominated films for Best Picture (the other two being Midnight in Paris and The Help). I would really like to see "The Artist" at the theater, if it will hang on for a couple more weeks.

It was a pretty warm/nice weekend, but we spent the rest of it cooped up inside (happily), with tea and books and studying (for him). Unfortunately, my body rebelled against the end of the weekend and I had a sudden-onset splitting headache last night. I ended up having to sleep upright on the living room couch to keep the blood from rushing to my aching temples, but the morning was actually quite nice--I rarely venture into that end of the apartment in the mornings, so I don't get the full benefit of a winter sunrise. It was lovely to wake up to the warm sun streaming through our tall windows, my headache gone, and to scrawl my morning pages over a bowl of oatmeal and raspberries. I did rush in to work this morning and immediately down two cups of coffee--clearly I missed my caffeine fix over the weekend (herbal tea just doesn't always cut it).

Anyway, tonight is Art Club and I'm excited to get together with the ladies and chat about art and life and have some good fun. I didn't meet my goal of writing 5,000 words since our last meeting, but I did write 2,000--and I probably wouldn't have done so without that goal in mind, so I call that a success :) Happy Monday, everyone!
