life lately: flowers and food and a fort

I had a busy weekend!  I'm leaving for Austin on Thursday, so K and I wanted to make the most of our last real "summer" weekend together.  On Saturday we headed down to Fort Ticonderoga, stopping along the way to take pictures in a beautiful field of sunflowers and to have breakfast at the Dutch Mill restaurant on Shelburne Rd.  I had delicious Eggs Benedict (of course!).  When we arrived in Ticonderoga, we first wandered around the King's Garden, which was gorgeous.  It was designed by Sarah Gibbs Thompson Bell, who actively supported preservation efforts and later became an advocate for women's rights (my kind of gal).  They were really lovely, and I discovered a new favorite flower (the corn poppy). I also LOVED the overgrown garden cottage in the back.  My camera died as we were leaving the gardens so I took a few photos of the fort with my Holga.  I'd been to the fort before, many years ago, but didn't remember much about it, so it was basically a new experience.

After leaving the fort we drove to Middlebury for dinner and a show.  I had seen that "The Journey of E: A Jazz Musical" would be at the Town Hall Theater that night, and I thought it sounded really interesting--an anthology of songs from the jazz age and an homage to Edith Piaf, with some historical narration.  So we stopped in for dinner at American Flatbread, where we had pizza and beer and it was great, and then we had after-dinner gelato on the way to the theater, where we bought some wine and settled in as the lights dimmed.  Oh. Dear. God.  Worst performance I have ever seen.  I'd have thought that everyone was drunk except it probably would have been livelier.  I cannot believe how terrible it was, guys.  It seemed like the actors were ad-libbing everything, and it just came off as lazy and unprepared.  I had been optimistic about the jazz singer, but she was only so-so and on the verge of bad.  K and I ended up sneaking out at intermission (and thank goodness there was an intermission, because I don't think we could have sat through the rest of the show).  Oh well, it was worth a shot.  Theater is so hit-or-miss these days.  I was kind of annoyed that I paid $15/ticket for the show, but K reminded me that the money went to support the Theater itself, and not the performers.  I felt much better knowing that I had done my duty and donated to the arts.  Anyway, it was a disappointment.

Tomorrow: Sunday at Hildene!

currently coveting: cozy blankets

blankets

Someday I will own a glorious Pendleton blanket (I especially adore this one and this one and this one)... the days and nights are cooling down just enough to make me crave coziness.

in which polka changed its spots

Photobucket

Wearing lots of prints today and loving it.

For some reason every outfit I envision for these heels involves polka dots.  I love the idea of leopard as a neutral--it really goes with everything!  I can't believe it took me so long to incorporate the print into my closet.  I have a feeling my uniform this fall/winter will look a little something like: little black dress, leopard heels, red lip, repeat (with a scarf thrown in here and there for good measure).

Tonight I need a break.  From life.  The plan is to go to the gym, have dinner, and take a nice long bubble bath (maybe accompanied by a melancholic French film).  My  body just feels sick and tired and worn out lately, and needs a little TLC.

in which i'm dressed for a fest

I wish I was wearing this at a rowdy music festival somewhere, rather than at the office.

I thought I was getting sick again yesterday (had a crazy sore throat), but I drank some Emergen-C and went to bed at a reasonable hour and I'm feeling okay today.  That was a close call.  Going to the gym worked out well with K on Monday night, and we're going again tonight!  Hooray for regular exercise.

Oh, and I started a tumblr, if anyone is interested (http://cf-wakinglife.tumblr.com/).  I find myself scrolling through tumblrs more and more these days, rather that blogs.  The times they are a'changing.  Or maybe I'm just getting lazier.  Anyway, I like looking at pretty pictures.  It's calming/meditative when I've got a lot on my mind :)

life lately: log town weekend

Photobucket Picture1022two Photobucket Picture1052two Photobucket Picture1033two Photobucket Picture1054two

This past weekend, K and I jumped at the opportunity to house-sit for my parents (aka babysit the dog) while they did some work on the cottage in Connecticut.  We arrived on Friday night and K cooked me a delicious dinner (potato-broccoli-cheese soup) and we drank wine and watched a movie.  The next day we made breakfast (I say "we" because I tried--and failed miserably--to make hash browns and omelets, and K had to step in last minute and salvage everything. "The canteloupe was good..." he said ;), took the dog for a walk in the woods (he's significantly less sprightly than he used to be, and needed a sit-in-the-swamp break halfway through), floated on the pond until the clouds started to look menacing, and retreated inside to read for the remainder of the rainy afternoon.  The next day we lounged around for a few hours in the morning and then K got a fire going and cooked steak (him) and a tofu dog (me) on the grill for lunch.  My parents got home around 2:30 and we headed back to our own abode.  These weekends at Log Town are never long enough!  I can't wait to have a house of my own...

PS K shaved his beard off and I love it (it always takes me about 24 hours to adjust when he shaves) but he has already started growing it back!  I can't convince him otherwise... :(

in which summer slowly fades

Photobucket

I won't lie, this outfit post was so close to not happening.  I'm having such a hard time motivating myself to take photos in the mornings (usually because I'm always running late, but also because I'm feeling fairly uninspired by my closet).  I wanted to wear this coat at least one more time this summer before it became pretty seasonally inappropriate (although, who am I kidding, I'm sure I'll probably keep wearing it through fall/winter).

K and I spent a wonderfully relaxing weekend at my parent's house, which was much needed.  We ate food, drank wine, went for walks, floated (briefly) on the pond, and read (I finished 'How to Be Good' in one day--pretty quick read).  And now it's back to work.  One thing I'm excited about: K has decided to join the gym!  Hooray!  I finally will have a workout buddy again :)  We're going this evening, for the first time in I'm-embarrassed-to-say-how-long.

I cannot believe how fast this summer has flown by.  Keeping busy makes time fly, which is good and bad.  I feel like I haven't had enough lazy days of wine drinking on the stoop and reading on riversides, but I have had a whole lot of fun.  And I'm ready for fall fashion (though don't get me wrong, that does not mean I'm ready for summer to end).

old house, sun set

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

So I've been pretty absent from blogging lately--whoops unintentional blogging hiatus.  Oh well.  I was busy and I've been fighting a bad cold for the past week, so you'll have to forgive.  In the meantime, here are some random photos I took of an abandoned house after K and I hiked Mt. Philo.  When we were first dating we used to go on all kinds of excursions to take photographs, but we've kind of gotten out of the habit.  Anyway, this house was really cool.  That creepy glow from inside is the sun setting on the opposite side of the house :)
